I vividly remember a trip early on where we went tubing down the Chattahoochee in Helen, GA. For those who dont know what tubing is, it is the outdoor version of a lazy river, and Helen is a wonderful location for this adventure. You park at the tubing center, catch a quick bus ride (with your inner tube and life vest) up river, then have a relaxing float downstream. Unfortunately, during this middle of the summer tubing adventure, a problem arose: a drought that year meant the water level in the river was precariously low. In reality, nothing revolving around tubing is precarious. The worst that can possibly happen is generally a mild sunburn or floating a little too far away from your family. But a low level of water means less effortless floating and more standing, walking, pushing, and annoyance. It also means more complaining by family members, which becomes a downward spiral. Water depth (along with bug spray and sunscreen) is key to a good tubing adventure. Good water depth provides a smooth, consistent trip down the river. In the same vein, depth is key in reading admissions files. When we are reading applications, we are looking at a number of factors, and one item we look for is depth. I love to see a student find a handful of co-curricular activities and, over the course of three to four years, develop both skills and leadership roles in these areas. Too many times we see files where a student suddenly adds 12th grade only clubs, sports, volunteer work and academic rigor in an attempt to boost their resume. To put it bluntly, applications that are a mile wide and an inch deep are not viewed as strongly as ones which show consistency. In the same way, we look for depth in a students curriculum. When we are looking at a students academic rigor, we are looking at what is available and what is then taken, and we focus on all four years of core courses, not just on the number of AP classes taken (a myth that I always have to correct). In saying this, we still enjoy seeing students who try some activity that is outside their comfort zone. I have seen jocks try out for the senior play, a group of students start a diving team from scratch, or a person finding a need in their community that they try to help. We love seeing people step up and stretch out. But overall, we value depth in the application, from curriculum to grades to activities. I believe that in the end, the United States and the Soviet Union realized that one country would eventually win, and the balance of power would again be shifted. Fearing a nuclear war, arms negotiations began in an attempt to lessen the tension. This is evident in the fact that treaties between the two countries were signed, agreeing on the limitation and testing of nuclear arms. It is also illus trated in the Cuban Missile Crisis, where Russia agreed to withdraw the missiles placed in Cuba, fearing U.S. retaliation. Two treaties, limiting the number of allowed weapons, radars, and launchers each country could possess, were signed on May 26, 1972. Then the SALT II talks began in September 1972 and ended in January 1979. A new treaty, called the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or START, began in May of 1982. In July of 1991, George Bush and Soviet President Gorbachev signed the START I Treaty, which reduced the number of nuclear warheads by about 25 percent. A START II Treaty, signed by Bush and Yeltsin in January 1993, eliminated almost three-quarters of the nuclear warheads still held by the U.S., Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. Such symptoms are usually temporary and slowly reduce, as the individual gets used to the higher fibre con tent in the diet.The individual should eat a high fibre diet by consuming a variety of foods. Fibre supplements including Metamucil or Citrucel should be consumed gradually, along with plenty of water (NDDIC, 2006). Studies have shown that individuals developing pain may also benefit from high fibre content as they tends to keep the intestines mildly distended. In this way, stools can be emitted painlessly. The fibre content should be increased by 2 to 3 grams a day. Besides, increasing the fibre content, the individual should also consume large quantities of water a day, as it helps to reduce both diarrhoea and constipation.Six to eight glasses of water should be consumed in a day. The individual should avoid sodas, as they increase the gas production and cause a lot of discomfort (NDDIC, 2006). Excessive amounts of fat and caffeine can cause the intestines to contract excessively resulting in development of severe abdominal cramps. Others foods such as alcohol, chewing gum, and co coa should also be avoided. Chewing gum may increase the intake of air into the digestive tract. Brief Model Comparison of How Conflict is Presented in Act 3 Scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet and The Laboratory Essay

Despite being written two centuries after Romeo and Juliet, The Laboratory by Robert Browning, taken from the 1842 collection, Dramatic Lyrics, explores many aspects of conflict that relate to both the Elizabethan and Victorian societies. Written as a dramatic monologue rather than a play, Browning uses the poem to expose how jealousy and envy lead to a catastrophic build-up of internal conflict, which results in her desire kill her rival by poisoning her in the presence of her lover. However, while it is clear that both Shakespeare and Browning are interested in presenting similar aspects of conflict within their respective societies, their approach to presenting these conflicts is rather different. Indeed, while Romeo and Juliet was written at the time as a play that was meant to be performed for an audience both in theatre and later as a film production, The Laboratory is a poem in the form of a dramatic monologue with a silent listener. Moreover, although Act 3 Scene 1 conveys aspects of conflict through a heavily male dominated scene, The Laboratory is delivered solely from the point of view of a female. As a result, when comparing how both texts present conflict, it is important to realise England was a different place in the 19th century; the growing industrial revolution was coupled with new scientific discoveries, and this meant that society placed less importance on religious belief and traditional behaviour. This is quite different to the context of Romeo and Juliet, where an Elizabethan society was strictly governed by social norms, limiting how people behaved, dressed and defined their sexuality. Firstly, both Shakespeare and Browning attempt to explore the conflict between religious belief and human morality. Both writers use religious imagery to externalise the internal conflict between religion and human morality building up inside each character. Browning uses anti-religious imagery right from the first stanza with the phrase ‘devil’s smithy’ and later by sarcastically referring to an ‘empty Church, to pray God in’. On the contrary, Shakespeare juxtaposes the change in Romeo’s character after Mercutio’s death by contrasting the line ‘away to heaven respective lenity’ with ‘fire-eyed fury be my conduct now. ’ While both references were considered blasphemous (against religious belief) in both the Elizabethan era and the Victorian era, Browning makes the blasphemy more explicit through the word ‘devil,’ and the juxtaposition between the word ‘empty’ and ‘God’ highlights the growing conflict between scientific development and religious belief in Victorian society. This conflict is further reinforced by the positive imagery of death created through the oxymoron ‘pure death’. Indeed, in the 19th century, more people lost faith in religious belief, when scientific theories like Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution began to create even more conflict between religion and science in society, so the idea of killing someone became both spiritually and morally easier. Yet, because society was stricter in the Elizabethan era, Shakespeare used alliteration in the letter ‘f’ in ‘fire eyed fury’ to add more emphasis to Romeo’s devilish behaviour†¦

Metaphorical importance in the poem Essay Although the goblins depict Rossettis opinion of men as sly, scheming creatures, they also refer back to the fairy tale context of the poem. The personification of the goblins would appeal to children as they often appear in fairy tales and folklore. References to the goblins as little men, hobbling down the glen create an image illustrative of a childs imagination and enforce the child like mask the poem uses. The use of the goblin metaphor would appeal greatly to children, but it would be more obvious to an older reader that the goblins are an ongoing metaphor for Rossettis opinions of men. The goblins are not enough to justify the opinion of Goblin Market being for children. Having discussed the fairytale aspects, on the other end of the scale there are frequent references to a sexual nature. The lines that read Tore her gown and soiled her stocking, and Clawed with their nails, Barking, mewing, hissing, mocking could be suggesting rape. Christina Rossetti had worked in High Gate Penitentiary, a business devoted to saving lost and loose women, as she has had experience of working with women whove been raped she decided to include this in her poetry. There is also a mention of violence, streaked her neck which quaked like curd. These references would not have been seen as a description of rape through the eyes of a nineteenth century child. The use of the terms sucking and She sucked until her lips were sore create very explicit imagery. This would not seem at all like a sexual reference to a child of the nineteenth century, but as previously pointed out it would be seen very clearly as a reference to sex by the youth of today. Toward the end of the poem a line uttered by Laura, Hug me, kiss me, suck my juices create another explicit sexual image. This I see as unsuitable for children, and therefore it becomes more apparent that Rossetti did not necessarily intend the poem for children. The continuing references to sex and sexuality distance the poem from being simply a verse for children. From these images of sex and violence we can make the justified opinion that Goblin Market was possibly meant for both adults and children. Through research into Christina Rossetti it is apparent that she was deeply religious. It is no surprise then that religious references are found in her poetry. The reference to the fruits that are consumed by the girls could well be a metaphor for the forbidden fruit that tempted Eve in the creation story of the Bible. However, the fruits may also be a metaphor representing the drug Laudanum, which the Pre-Raphaelite models would constantly use. Also, it describes Lizzie and Laura appearing like angels when sleeping, Golden head by golden head Folded in each others wings. As we know, angels are often seen as religious creatures, appearing in the Bible, and they are often used to describe purity and virginity. These religious references can be identified easily in the poem, and engage both younger and older readers. The use of two female characters may have some reference to the male dominated society in Victorian Britain. There are no significant female heroes in English literature up to the time of Rossetti. Female protagonists exist, like Elizabeth in Austens Pride and Prejudice, but they have no outlet for heroic action. They are bound by the gender-roles into which a male-dominated society had placed them. In Goblin Market, Rossetti builds a basic framework of behaviour in which a female hero (or heroin) might operate. Rossettis attempts are to some degree successful, though she fails to solve the problem completely. The use of the female characters also allows Rossetti to comment upon the treatment of women by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
